More About Me
My name is Mahkam Mostaghim. I paint. I am originally from Iran, but have travelled all over the world and have lived in Ireland since 2010. I would like to think that my painting style incorporates something from all the place that I have visited in my lifetime. The English biographer Evan Charteris once said of the painter John Singer Sargent that 'to live with [his] watercolours is to live with sunshine captured and held.' This quote captures the essence of watercolour painting for me and expresses far more eloquently than I ever could why it is that I love painting in watercolours so much.
I had a kind of instinctive feeling for art from my childhood and started painting when I was ten. My love for painting grew as I got older and I spent several years at the College of Teheran studying fine art subjects such as life drawing, oil painting and finally watercolour painting. Many of the courses were under the supervision of such famous Iranian artists as Gholamhossein Nami and Khoraminajad. They opened my eyes to different styles such as impressionism, surrealism and abstract art. As for my own style, it is mainly influenced by impressionism and realism. I worked as a professional artist in Iran for several years and was lucky enough to have 12 exhibitions. Subjects included Iran and its history, landscapes and portraits of Iranian women. I have always had a particular love for painting Persian flowers, as our country is known as the “Land of love and flowers”.
I graduated in fashion and costume design in 1997 from Azahra University of Fine Art. Before, during and after I continued painting and organizing exhibitions. I worked for Iranian TV as a fashion designer until I left the country; I had realized there was no further opportunity for me to advance my career in fahion in Iran as a woman in Iran.
In 2003 I left Iran and moved to China, where I worked as language and art teacher for several years. I kept on painting and selling my work. A chance to further develop my art eventually led me towards Ireland. I moved to Dublin in 2010 and am now seriously to pursuing a career in graphic art, painting.
I received a higher degree with first honour in Graphic Design from Glamorgan University and achieved an advance diploma as well. I have experience of working for the Irish Writing Centre as graphic designer and some other freelance works; besides of freelancing in interpreting work at language department for DCU University and some other companies.
